Highways
New York State Route 17/I-86, which forms one of Elmira’s borders, provides easy east-west access from New York City to Buffalo. Branching off Route 17/I-86, I-390 goes to Rochester, I-81 to Syracuse and Washington, D.C., I-88 to Albany and Montreal, and I-84 to New England.

Air Service
The Elmira-Corning Regional Airport provides commercial jet service (with one connection) to all major American cities and 13 international destinations. The airport also offers a well-qualified fixed-base operation to service any corporate aircraft. Utilities are in place and land is earmarked for future development.

Rail Service
Freight rail service is provided in the region by Norfolk Southern, the New York Susquehanna and Western, Canadian Pacific (Delaware and Hudson). Owego and Harford provide trackage and service to all areas. We also have a dozen colleges and universities in the region providing idea-incubation and research facilities as well as a steady supply of graduates. Heading the list is Cornell University in Ithaca, an Ivy League School with full-time student enrollment of 19,000. The university boasts one of the largest and fastest supercomputers in academia. Through its Corporate Connections program, Cornell strives to meet the technology development and transfer needs of industry.

Likewise, Alfred University collaborates
with regional industry leaders through its research programs, especially the School of Ceramic Engineering and Materials Science. Elmira College adds approximately 300 liberal arts students to the job market each year, while Corning Community College focuses on extensive corporate partnerships to ensure not only a plentiful supply of job-ready graduates, but also to provide ongoing training for employees. The College Center of the Finger Lakes, a unique consortium of colleges, offers courses, degrees and certificates including an MBA from Syracuse University, a BS in mechanical engineering from Alfred, and graduate engineering courses from National Technological University.

Healthcare
Elmira offers two full-service hospitals providing acute care and specializing in maternity care and neonatal intensive care, cancer care, women’s health, cardiology/cardiac surgery, alcohol rehabilitation, mental health services, and physical rehabilitation. Also, the Guthrie Healthcare System in Sayre, PA, manages dozens of clinics throughout the Southern Tier of NY and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, and specializes in minimally invasive surgery and primary care.

We also have a full complement of services for older adults, including homes for independent living, adult day care, personal care services, low income senior housing, short-term and long-term residential care, and a dementia care unit.

Houses of Worship
The Southern Tier has places of worship to meet every need including Baptist, Congregational, Episcopal, Jewish, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Unitarian, United Church of Christ, and Wesleyan.

Retailers
In addition to “main street” style shopping in downtown Elmira and Hanover Square in Horseheads, Chemung County is also home to the Arnot Mall and Consumer Square in Big Flats. The newly refurbished Arnot Mall features more than 100 department and specialty stores, plus restaurants, service providers and a 10-movie theatre complex. Consumer Square boasts more than 2 million square feet of new retail space developed since 1995. In nearby Corning, you can enjoy a historic shopping district of quaint shops, outlet stores and restaurants. Prime Outlets, on the northern end of Seneca Lake offers 95 major brand name stores.
